【Summary】

In the next Science Café, I will talk about our recent study, which was published beginning of this year in the journal Biomaterials Science.

Controlling brain lipid metabolism, particularly in the hypothalamus, is an effective way of managing energy balance and fighting metabolic diseases like obesity. Suppression of fatty acid oxidation in the hypothalamus through CPT1A inhibition induces satiety, but conventional drugs cannot achieve this in vivo. To overcome this problem, an innovative polymer micelle-type nanomedicine platform has been developed that stably encapsulates the CPT1A inhibitor C75-CoA for in vivo hypothalamic control. Upon central administration, the polymeric nanomedicine rapidly decreased food intake, peripheral metabolism and body weight in mice. This study presents the first nanomedicine-based therapeutic approach to target brain lipid metabolism, showing promise in treating common metabolic disorders like obesity.
