[Summary]
The long noncoding RNA (lncRNA) small nucleolar host gene-12 (SNHG12) is named because it encodes three types of snoRNAs, a type of small noncoding RNA, in its intron. Therefore, SNHG12 is often thought to be a junk transcript that exists to produce snoRNAs, but its involvement in DNA damage and vascular senescence was reported in 2020, and its involvement in maintaining the integrity of the blood-brain barrier was identified in 2022. In this Science Cafe, I would like to highlight SNHG12 and introduce the uncovered functions of lncRNAs.
