 Yugyoji Temple /

Yugyoji Temple (also known as Fujisawa-san Muryoukouin Shojokoji Temple) is the head temple of the Jishu. The Yugyoji-zaka slope facing the southeast of the temple grounds is one of the most difficult parts of the Hakone Ekiden (relay race) held at the beginning of every year. This area was also the Fujisawa-Juku on the Tokaido way. The temple has many treasures in its collection, including the national treasure "Ippen Sei-e". (Right) Statue of Ippen Shonin. Ippen, who was also known as Yugyo Shonin, traveled around Japan handing out "Namu Amida Butsu for 600,000 People" handbills and dancing Nembutsu. The Nembutsu Odori is also thought to be the origin of the Bon Odori.
